It is a matter of joy to us that, this department is not only the largest department in respect of number of students pursuing their studies of this college, but also the largest of all the colleges in the district.
From its inception this department has a privilege to have some distinguished teachers by whose method of teaching the student community in general have been greatly benefited. Special mention may be made here of Professor and renowned poet Sri Pinakinandan Das Mahapatra who has been awarded the prestigious ‘ Neheru Prize` by translating the poem of Rasul Gamzatov from Russian to Bengali from the Soviet Russia. Apart from Professor Das Mahapatra the name of another distinguished Professor Dr. Ashis Kumar Majumder be mentioned, who had his Ph.D thesis under the able supervision of Dr. Sukumar Sen the legendary personality in Bengali Language and Literature and his thesis was of such a towering standard that, Dr.Sen alluded it in his almost legendary books “BangalaSahityerItihas” ( History of Bengali Literature). The present faculty members of the department are always enthusiastic to carry out intensive research work in various areas of language and literature. Apart from its heavy academic workload and activities the department has organized many special lectures and seminars not only on conventional issues of literature, but also in most of the valuable areas of literature beyond the prescribed syllabus of different courses from the year 2015-2019.
Students belonging to Honours and P.G. Courses of this department from its inception have done fairly well in almost all University examinations. One of our students named Alokshikha Kundu has been the topper by securing highest marks in Bengali Honours course of Vidyasagar University and Vidyasagar Vidyapith I.S.& Social Welfare Trust awarded her Gold Medal in the year 2017. In each year 40% students in U.G. Honours Course and 95% students in P.G. Course have attained 1st Class marks. Achieving constantly good results is the distinguishing features of this department.
The students belonging to U.G. and P.G. Courses following strictly the research methodology to make their field studies in Folk culture and Folk literature, prepare Dissertation Papers on different fields of literature and thereby published their dissertations which not only enrich themselves, but also our department to a greater extent. Apart from not limiting the students within the jurisdiction of teaching and learning process, we always encourage them to engage in various cultural affairs and try our level best to lead them so that they may perform commendable services for the betterment and uplift of the society.
